Alexander McQueen Camouflage Skull & Rose Tote

  • Posted on February 25, 2010 at 12:17 pm

For those of you who think that Alexander McQueen handbags might be a little too out there for your taste, I may have found a bag for you.

Looking at the name of the bag, I was wondering what was really meant by the word camouflage. Did it have to do with the colors, the design, some hidden meaning? It is not that McQueen camouflaged his genius or his innate ability to take design to the next level. Perhaps the word surrounds the idea that the bag is a bit more understated than most of us might be used to.

The Alexander McQueen Camouflage Skull & Rose Tote has understated beauty and edge written all over it. In fact, at first glance I barely noticed the skulls intertwined with the rose print design. The combination of rose and skull print on the canvas provides a great way to introduce femininity and edginess at the same time. Since the skulls aren’t as prominent as the roses, they do require a double take in order to be noticed. The canvas has wonderful brown leather trip and a great chain strap with 7″ drop. Everything works together in perfect harmony for a fabulous tote that would look good on the shoulder of so many women no matter what your taste may be!

Valentino Ruffled Nappa Hobo

  • Posted on February 4, 2010 at 12:06 pm

Get ready to be surprised and astounded, you guys: I’ve found a Valentino bag about which I am totally and utterly ambivalent. I know this doesn’t happen often, so if you feel like you need to take a moment to let that sink in, please go ahead and take one. We’ll wait.

You back? Great.

In fact, I’m having trouble rustling up any thoughts about it at all. However, one continues to reoccur: for two grand, not only can you get a better bag in general, you can get a far more interesting Valentino bag.

The ruffles are suitably rich and textured, I suppose, and the graduated size from top to bottom is ok. Something about it is just not impressive to me at all, however, and maybe it’s because I’ve seen the brand do ruffles in so many more interesting and intricate ways. Perhaps the problem is that they do such an out-of-the-ballpark job with designs that are much more complex, and in comparison, it’s hard to celebrate their ability to pull off something so comparatively simple.

Roger Vivier Carla Bag

1Delicate simplicity has become terribly underrated in the frenzy that is the accessories market. That said, I was refreshed to see that Roger Vivier’s Carla bag–first seen on the arm of its namesake First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy–has made its way from the French brand’s outré-expensive couture line into the ready-to-wear collection for spring. Ladies, universal appeal this bag does not have (it gravitates toward a professional, elegant woman–age notwithstanding) but those who do find themselves armed with this framed bag will undoubtedly want to channel a modern version of Jackie-O and her trademark pillbox hats. This bag, available in small and large sizes, won’t fit much (its dainty leather strap practically guarantees that), but then again, with your driver in tow–and women who carry this bag almost always will–you won’t need to. I’m particularly attracted to the bag’s slim buckle on the front–a quintessential emblem of the brand–while in back, the profile of the buckle appears subliminal (sewn in, one could say). Available in a wild range of textures, from uber-chic pony skin & crocodile to garnet-red washed leather or black patent, go ahead and pick a color: your Prince Charming awaits.2

Basil Racuk Hard Brief

  • Posted on January 22, 2010 at 7:36 pm

With all of the men’s shows happening in Europe this week, I’ve been thinking a lot about manbags. Historically they’ve been a fashion staple, but much like hats, they fell out of favor in the second half of the last century. At least in a small way, however, they appear to be back and gaining leverage over the past few years.

And where there’s an opportunity to sell things, those trying to sell an expensive version of those things can’t be far behind. There are now more choices for luxury manbags than ever before, and my personal favorite (of the day, anyway) is the Basil Racuk Hard Brief.

Something about the stark, minimalist lines of this hand-crafted bag, combined with the vintage, weathered finish really appeals to me. The two ideas seem a bit disparate in discussion, but when they’re combined, the product couldn’t be more modern and chic. I would date a man carrying a bag like this in a heartbeat, and I wouldn’t question his manliness over it for a nanosecond – in fact, it might mean that he’s less likely to make fun of my bag habit, as every man I’ve dated since the beginning of…well, since the beginning of EVER…has done.

The design features little hardware and few outward design flourishes, allowing the masterful leather finishing to take center stage, as it rightfully should. I’ve been looking at this bag for a while now, and part of me thinks that perhaps it will soon be fashionable for women to carry bags like this one, just as it has become fashionable for women to wear men’s watches. If you’d like to start that trend, you know what bag with which to do it. $810, Available exclusively via the Basil Racuk store, Berkeley, CA.

Burberry Leather Satchel

According to a graphic design professor I had in college, the vast majority of the US population chooses blue as their favorite color, and it’s relatively uncommon to find someone that chooses differently. Before she shared this factoid with us, she went around the room and asked everyone in the twenty-person class what color they liked best. Indeed, 19 people said blue. I was the lone holdout – my favorite color has been red for a long, long time (when I was very little, it was black). And not just any red – more specifically, scarlet. Not quite dark enough to be maroon, but darker and richer than a fire engine. I am endlessly in search of bags (and anything else) that fit this criteria, and in my experience, a good red bag is unfortunately hard to find.

Burberry Leather Satchel

Which is why I was so pleased to see the brand new Burberry Leather Satchel. Because of the nature of red pigmentation, in can be really difficult to get a rich color on leather and red bags often lack the pop that I desire. Not so with this purse, though – the red is deep and lovely (patent or glazed red bags usually have better luck getting this effect) and the bag’s design is simple enough to show off the great color. The hardware details are also great, but not overdone – the chain and the handle attachment are both subtly imprinted with Burberry’s signature check pattern.

3

The Spring 2010 collection from Bottega Veneta centered around cream colored clothing which allows the wearer to play with colorful accessories. Bottega Veneta developed a techinque for their signature intrecciato weaving to give the leather the characteristic feel and behavior of straw. In fact, one woven-leather intrecciato bag sounded exactly like a straw bag when you squeezed it toget

her. This is yet another way in which Maier manifests his design genius.

The colors on the handbags pop, just as Maier intended for them to do. With a cream colored clothing palette, accessories take creative control of your outfit. Bottega Veneta has infused exotic crocodile skins for spring in deeply saturated jewel toned blue, green, and yellow.

With fancy Italian names like Paille Cocco Glace, Yolk Cocco Lave Cabat or Paille Intreccio Nuvolato Maxi Veneta, it is near impossible not to give these creations your full attention. The intense colors, the beautiful crafting and the outstanding quality of the leathers boost our desire for this Bottega S/S line that much more.
