NEW Bremont Supermarine 500

On the 2nd April at 11.10am local time on Long Island in the Bahamas, Bremont ambassador and British freediver, Sara Campbell, set a new World Record in womens freediving of 96m Constant Weight on just one breath.
Sara, who has been involved with the Bremont testing and development of the new Supermarine watch held her breath for 3 minutes and 36 seconds.

Sara Campbell, the 36-year-old Briton, shocked the world by setting three World Records within 48 hours, just nine months after starting the extreme sport of free diving.

Sara who is a Bremont ambassador is testing the new Supermarine 500. The Bremont Supermarine 500 is an ‘amphibious watch’, both classical in its design and aviation roots but very effective as a diving watch. It has been developed as a tribute to the iconic British aircraft manufacturer responsible for the Supermarine S6B Schneider Trophy Seaplane and the incredible Supermarine Spitfire.

Following on from the success that the Company has had with its aviation watches, Nick and Giles English wanted to build an “amphibious watch” that was both classical in its design and aviation roots but very effective as a diving watch.

The design of the Supermarine has been built using Bremont’s unique Trip-TickÔ three piece case construction which gives it a water resistance depth of 500m or 1660ft, but keeps the classic curved profile of the 42mm case design which is so distinctive to Bremont. An elegant crown protector has been built onto the side of the inner barrel, and following on from other Bremont models, the watch case has been specially treated for hardness using Bremont’s B-EBE2000 technology.

As with all Bremont watches the Supermarine is Swiss Made at the Bremont atelier in Biel-Bienne and houses a modified BE-36A automatic chronometer movement.

Extensive testing in the UK by Bremont on this and other new models at its test facility has led to the design and construction of an ‘Anti-Shock’ movement mount to help protect the movement against large shocks. The movement is also housed inside an Anti-Magnetic faraday cage to protect the balance, balance spring and escapement from any effects of magnetisation.

For clarity the bezel is being made of sapphire which covers the Superluminova C5 numbers, and the sapphire crystal covering the dial will be coated on both sides with Bremont’s usual 9 layers of anti reflective coating.

The watch has been named as a tribute to the brothers love of the iconic British aircraft manufacture responsible for the Supermarine S6B Schneider TrophySeaplane and of course the incredible Supermarine Spitfire.

IWC 2009 Aquatimer Watches Defeat Early Gripes To Win Over Watch Collectors

Make ‘em big, make ‘em bold, and oh yes–make sure there’s plenty of luminous applications that keep a brilliant glow for more than just a few minutes.  With that last point in mind, I have to sing the praises of the IWC’s 2009 Aquatimer line, which I’ve recently been able to see live for the first time this year.    (Click here to read a summary of the 2009 IWC Aquatimer collection)

Both the dial and the rotating sapphire bezels of the 2009 IWC Aquatimer models are most impressive; the glow is intense, for certain, but what grabs you the most is the way in which IWC has combined different colors of illumination.  Of course, it looks as cool as all get out in the darkness, but its also useful for the watch’s mission as a diver’s tool–hours and minutes are impossible to confuse, and the bezel simplifies the essential task of marking off diving intervals such as safety stops.  

When IWC announced a new series of Aquatimer watches in early 2009, excitement was rampant among the IWC faithful.  However, there was also a certain amount of immediate grumbling from those who felt that IWC had created a watch that was not as “sophisticated” as the outgoing internal bezel models, and represented cost-cutting by IWC.  Others felt let down by the bright colors, opining that these made the watches look overly trendy.  Happily, these sentiments are not heard on watch forums much these days, as the new Aquatimer models finally make it to IWC retailers, and the collections of happy owners–some of which were former critics that changed their mind instantly when they got their first in-person exposure to the line. (It just goes to show, you can’t judge a watch design by an image alone.  There’s just no substitute for seeing and handling “in the metal”.)  

In person, it becomes clear that the 2009 IWC Aquatimer collection is  unquestionably a successful iteration of IWC’s line of water-worthy sports watches.  The ‘09 Aquatimer watches exude tremendous quality in every detail, meet all the qualifications of a real professional divers watch, and have the keen good looks to stand out among their competition in the high-end mechanical dive watch genre.

SIHH 2009: Girard-Perregaux R&D 01 Chronograph Monte Carlo 1983 Watch
By Adam Keith, Associate Timepiece Editor for ViaLuxe-At the SIHH 2009 exhibition in Geneva, Swiss watchmaker Girard-Perregaux unveiled a limited edition R&D 01 Chronograph watch, whose sporty detailing and distinctive case design commemorate the Monte-Carlo Rally of 1983–the same year in which Walter Rohrl and co-driver Christian Geistdorfer claimed the first overall position driving a Lancia 037.

The 43mm stainless steel case of the Girard-Perregaux R&D 01 Chronograph Monte Carlo 1983 watch was designed by Luigi Macaluso.  It displays a finely brushed finish that is pleasingly accented by a domed polished bezel; the protected crown at 4 o’clock controls the winding and setting of the watch.  Located between the inverted chronograph pushers on the left side of the case is a secondary crown that governs the operation of an internal rotating bezel.  Accents of blue and red enliven the technically detailed black dial, with its four silver subdials, and bold Arabic hour markers and sword shaped hands applied with luminous material. To enhance the legibility of the chronograph complication, elapsed chronograph minutes are indicated via a large central hand with a blue arrow tip.  Subdials at 3 and 6 o’clock indicate the day/night scale and the date, respectively.  A discreet “Monte-Carlo 1983″ inscription atop the date pays homage to a respected achievement in the world of automobile racing.

Animating the R&D 01 Chronograph Monte Carlo 1983 watch is the self-winding GP033C0 caliber, a movement designed and manufactured by Girard-Perregaux.  Frequency of the smooth balance is 28,800 vibrations per hour, enabling the chronograph to record independent intervals of elapsed time with 1/8th second precision. Power reserve is 46 hours.  Six screws secure the caseback, which features a sapphire crystal exhibition window.  Circular graining, Cotes de Geneve, and chamfered edges are among the traditional finishing which impart beauty to the refined Girard-Perregaux caliber.
