Baume & Mercier Watches: Swiss watch makers since 1830 - now on Twitter and FacebookThis year Baume & Mercier is celebrating its 180th anniversary. In 1830 Louis Victor Baume and Pierre-Joseph Célestin Baume founded the watch makers of the same name in the Les Bois village, in the Swiss Jura Mountains. Their motto, “Accept only perfection, only manufacture watches of the highest quality.” In 1920 Baume & Co became Baume & Mercier with the partnership between William Baume, talented watch maker and grandson of the founder, and Paul Mercier.

One hundred and eighty years of fine watch making results in an envious heritage. And now in 2010 Baume & Mercier watches are on the social media network sites Twitter and Facebook. In creating a Twitter account and a Facebook page Baume & Mercier are looking for novel ways of interacting with watch enthusiasts. And they have chosen an interesting way of going about this.

Through Twitter and Facebook this prestigious watch maker invites internet users to rediscover its heritage and its history. On Facebook they present a diary entitled ‘Secrets of a Watch making Family’ in which the story of the birth of Baume & Mercier is retold in both English and French. Through daily ‘tweets’ and updates anecdotes and insights from the daring watch makers are shared with followers and fans.

Pre-SIHH 2010: Baume & Mercier Classima Executives XL Chronograph Complete Calendar Watch
Of all the complications in the world of watchmaking, few have such an appealing combination of technical fascination and uncluttered elegance as the complete calendar with moon phase indication. This type of wristwatch, extremely popular during the 1940s and 1950s, is once again brought to life in the Baume & Mercier Classima Executives XL Chronograph Complete Calendar. The timepiece, which Baume & Mercier will present at the 2010 Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in January, also showcases a chronograph function and a 24-hour indicator–all within a classically shaped round case measuring a contemporary 42mm in diameter.

Those reveling in fine details and enduring design will surely appreciate the numerous subtleties of the Classima Executives XL Chronograph Complete Calendar watch. Chief among these is the finely executed silvered dial, which features a stamped “grain d’orge” guilloche pattern at center, a satin silvered surface on the outer section, and subdials with concentric circle patterns at the chronograph counters. The graceful leaf-shaped hands are oxidized black, a finish which produces a very restrained appearance and excellent contrast against the silvery background. The sole exception here is the date pointer with its crescent-shaped tip–this hand is gilt-finished to stand out from the timekeeping and chronograph hands. What is more, the graceful date hand is a keen match for the gleaming golden countenance of the moon on its rotating disc in the window cutout at 6 o’clock. These elements both enhance the understated allure of the complete calendar function with its dual window indications for day of the week and month.

The Baume & Mercier Classima Executives XL Chronograph Complete Calendar watch is animated by the ETA-Valjoux 7751 caliber. This self-winding mechanical movement is based upon the legendary 7750 caliber, a movement that has amassed a decades-long reputation for precision, robustness, and sheer reliability in countless chronograph timepieces produced by a plethora of respected Swiss watch brands. The start, stop, and return to zero operations of the chronograph are controlled via cam switching, rather than a traditional column wheel. Power reserve of the 7751 is approximately 42 hours, and the smooth balance beats at a pace of 28,800 vibrations per hour–this rapid frequency enables the chronograph to record independent time sequences to within 1/8th second. Aesthetic features the movement offers in this iteration includes Cotes de Geneve patterns on the bridges, a winding rotor with brand personalization, and blued screws; these elements will be clearly visible to the owner, thanks to a transparent sapphire exhibition window in the caseback.

Water resistance is rated for 30 meters. The Classima Executives XL Chronograph Complete Calendar timepiece is fitted with a curved sapphire crystal, and an alligator leather strap with a polished stainless steel folding clasp displaying the Baume & Mercier signature.
