Luminor for Paneristi’s Anniversary

  • Posted on July 8, 2010 at 4:02 pm

Ten years have gone by since the launch of the website www.paneristi.com and in that time, the Panerai watch enthusiasts who exchange information, comments and stories on the site forum have grown from just a few dozen to several thousand from all over the world. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of this story of extraordinary passion, Officine Panerai presents a new Special Edition watch dedicated to the “Paneristi” and made at their request – the Luminor for Paneristi’s Anniversary.

The new Luminor for Paneristi’s Anniversary, designed by Officine Panerai and bearing in mind the guidelines and preferences expressed by the community of “Paneristi”, comes with a 44 mm Luminor case, distinguished by the classic crown-protecting bridge device, making the watch water resistant up to 30 atmospheres (approximately 300 m in depth).

The case, bezel, bridge and crown are coated in DLC, as is the buckle that closes the strap in antiqued leather. The watch is personalised by the steel caseback, which bears the engraved inscription Paneristi.com, and Tenth Anniversary.

Standing out on the black dial are the classic numerals and large index markers so typical of Panerai, made in a special ecru SuperLumiNova® – which also coats the hands – adding to the watch’s vintage look. “Luminor Panerai” and the OP logo are engraved in white. The movement of the Luminor Logo DLC – 44mm is the hand-wound OP I calibre.

The Luminor for Paneristi’s Anniversary was launched on the Paneristi forum on 1st July 2010 and the same medium was used to provide instructions for ordering the watch. The 300 pieces produced sold out in the few minutes following the publication of the relative post.

Panerai Watches Mare Nostrum Evokes the 1940’s Italian Riviera

If you’re into “all things Italian”, then you may dream about driving your Ferrari along the Amalfi Coast, sipping a 2003 Pio Cesare l’Altro Chardonnay with your “amante” and wearing a Panerai watch. Believe me, you are not alone, and while your dream of driving a Ferrari may be out of reach, you might still be able to afford to buy the wine. I’m not so sure about the watch. Paneria watches’ recently released “Mare Nostrum” edition timepiece is their tribute to the original edition from the 1940’s, and it is the second time the company has rereleased this popular model. The original 1940’s edition was limited to three watches, so it is hard to find a picture to back this up, but Panerai claims the latest version is true to the original.

The original Mare Nostrum, designed for deck officers in 1943, never made it past the prototype stage because the Officine Panerai had to stop production during the war, so its rerelease is even more notable today. This time, 99 pieces will be made, and each of these 52mm diameter watches will be priced at $36,000. Before you let the price of a Panerai watches stop you, remember that these Italian watches are known for retaining their value over time. Why not recreate the chic elegance of 1940’s Italy?

SIHH 2010: Panerai PAM00300 Mare Nostrum Chronograph Watch

SIHH 2010: Panerai PAM00300 Mare Nostrum Chronograph Watch
The enthusiasts of luxury watch brand Panerai are surely thrilled at the 2010 reintroduction of the fabled Mare Nostrum, a timepiece which was intended as an issue timepiece to deck officers of the Italian Navy in the 1940s but did not proceed to production beyond a few prototypes, all of which were thought lost until the recent discovery of one. It was this surviving example which Officine Panerai used for the creation of a revived Mare Nostrum chronograph–an exhibit that has received a most enthusiastic reception at SIHH 2010. The new timepiece, which carries the reference PAM00300, faithfully recreates the prototype in all of its massive 52mm glory and will be produced in a limited edition of just 99 watches.

Imposing and completely purposeful in execution, the case is wrought from brushed 316L stainless steel and features stalk-type chronograph pushers and a winding crown bearing the Mare Nostrum signature. Recessed at the center, where the small seconds and chronograph 30-minutes counter are located, the dial shows off brilliantly luminous minute details, including a minutes scale and a combination of hour markers in Arabics and indices. In addition to the dual “Mare Nostrum” and Radiomir Panerai signatures, those obsessed with fine detail are sure to appreciate the arsenal of richly blued hands that this reference features, to say nothing of the finely crenellated bezel edge and screwed-through strap lugs.

The 2010 Panerai Mare Nostrum chronograph watch utilizes a classical, manually wound movement which originates from the famed Minerva manufacture and has undergone exclusive modifications by Panerai. Traditional features of quality include a horizontally-coupled chronograph controlled by a column-wheel, and a shapely swan neck fine adjustment spring. The large balance wheel, outfitted with mass screws on its rim, beats to and fro at the classical pace of 18,000 vibrations per hour. Thanks to a window of sapphire crystal in the stainless steel back, one can fully admire the structural intricacies of the caliber, as well as its fine decorative nuances, the latter including Cotes de Geneve patterned bridges and steel levers with meticulously beveled edges. Power reserve of the barrel is 55 hours, that figure being somewhat less if the chronograph is in operation for a significant length of time.

Completing the authentic appearance and design of the Panerai 2010 Mare Nostrum Chronograph is a strap in green fabric complete with a matching leather lining. The only deviation from the historic predecessor can be found in the buckle–here, the design team of Officine Panerai elected to fit a trapezoidal stainless steel buckle, a detail which connects this very special reference to the other timepieces within the modern-day Panerai watch collection.
