Once Again, Jura Watches Leads the Way

  • Posted on February 25, 2010 at 10:56 am

Launched in 2007, Jura Watches has become the No.1 independent retailer for over half of the brands that it represents. Ever since, Jura Watches has become renowned for its pioneering approach to the selling of luxury watches online. Today, Jura Watches unveiled the World’s first Virtual Watch application: a flash based Augmented Reality solution enabling you to try on your watch in the comfort on your computer screen.

A screenshot from Jura Watches' new Virtual Watch Application - a World first for the industry.

Jura Watches’ Augmented Reality (AR) application lets you see a watch on your wrist while sitting in front of your PC at home. This in-house developed, virtual watch technology has been written from the ground up and is designed to seamlessly integrate with Jura’s website. Unlike previous AR applications, visitors to the web site won’t have to download and install a bespoke application. Alastair Laidlaw, Co-Founder of Jura Watches said, “This is a key step forward in offering our customers an even better online experience: They can now choose to view high quality 360 degree photography, zoom in on ultra high resolution 2-D images or see what the watch would look like on their own wrist; all from the comfort of their own home”.

How Does it Work?
The aim of Augmented Reality is to create an experience that closely represents what would be achieved in the real world by combining live video with computer generated images. In this Virtual Watch application, a selection of watches has been modelled in 3-D. To see what these watches would look like on your wrist, simply print out a marker, place it on your wrist and hold it in front of your web camera: Before you know it, you will appear to be wearing the watch.

It is By No Means Perfect
Augmented Reality is still in its infancy and today has significant limitations. Image quality is good but not faultless and it is always going to be difficult to render a 2-D object in to a perfect 3-D representation. A number of factors will also affect the user experience including the processor speed of the computer, the resolution of the web cam and the lighting in the room. Further technical developments expected within 12 months will not only improve image quality and the user experience on PCs but will also see major developments in AR for mobile devices.

Laidlaw continues, “The first time you see it working is a real ‘Star Trek’ moment. I clearly remember the time before broadband became ubiquitous and mobile phones were for the elite. I am certain that augmented reality will soon become an integral part of the way we consume and evaluate information online. I hope that our Virtual Watch Application will bring pleasure to a good number of watch enthusiasts and may help some of our potential clients gain a better understanding of what a range of different watches would look like on the wrist: Potentially helping them make a more informed buying decision.”

Balvinder Singh Powar, Watch Lover and Founder of Spain’s Cronotime remarks, “Thanks to Jura’s fresh approach, innovation and dynamism, they have rapidly established themselves as pioneering leaders in the wristwatch market place. This is largely due to their intense customer service focus and continued championing of cutting edge brands to a wider audience using revolutionary multimedia and web technologies both in store and for those visiting from the comfort of their own homes. From the world’s largest plasma screen to sophisticated online imaging tools, the Jura experience is an unforgettable adventure for the watch lover, wherever you are.”

You can try on one of Jura’s luxury watches now, test the Virtual Watch application for yourself.

Clipper 44 mm Mechanical Chronograph from Hermes

This year, the renowned watchmaker Hermes is pleased to unveil a new interpretation of its legendary Clipper watch.

The new Clipper 44 mm Mechanical Chronograph watch features a 44 mm case, sculptured in steel and titanium. For its brilliant performance and lightness, titanium is highly appreciated in the world of sailing. Both front and backsides of the watch case are fitted with glareproofed sapphire crystals. Hermes’ novel brainchild boasts 200-meter water-resistance.

Although designed for action, this new Hermes watch is also extremely elegant. Reminiscent of the famous sailboat’s porthole, Clipper 44 mm Mechanical Chronograph will appeal to those in search for a special timekeeping companion.

The chronograph watch is powered by a reliable self-winding chronograph movement - Valjoux 7750 calibre. It provides a 46-hour power reserve. This mechanism serves to animate the following functions: hours, minutes, seconds, date, as well as that of chronograph.

The dial of the Clipper watch is featured in three versions: anthracite, palladium or copper brown. It reveals hour, minute and small seconds sub-dials, positioned at 6, 12 and 9 o’clock correspondingly. The date is viewable through an exhibition window, placed at 3 o’clock.

The Hermes Clipper 44 mm Mechanical Chronograph watch is affixed to a black, orange or brown rubber strap. Alternatively, the watch, reviewed by Watches.InfoNIAC.com, can be mounted on a steel and titanium bracelet.

The Watch Gallery Brands at SIHH 2010

  • Posted on January 27, 2010 at 2:41 pm

the-watch-galleryThis week we have been posting news about exceptional new timepieces from certain brands that have been unveiled at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva. The Salon is an opportunity for an exclusive group of fine watchmakers to put on show for watch professionals and journalists their new collection for the coming year. The Salon is organised by the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie.

At this years opening ceremony, Fabienne Lupo (Managing Director, SIHH),said “Our new models for 2010 are examples of tradition and innovation, artistry, craftsmanship and technology. They refocus on the fundamental values of Fine Watchmaking and pay tribute to centuries-old expertise, handed down between generations. The same expertise that has always seduced our customers and which remains our greatest asset.”

The tradition of these Salons started in 1991 with only five exhibitors. It was created to promote fine watches and to offer an elegant setting for an elite clientèle. Now, in 2010 and the twentieth year of the Salon, there are 19 exhibitors.

The Watch Gallery, in London, is an authorised dealer for five of these exclusive brands, they are Girard Perregaux, Jaeger LeCoultre, JeanRichard, Parmigiani and Panerai.

The new collections of the 19 luxury brands of fine watches were displayed in over 30 000 square meters of exhibition space. And despite the concerns about the economy worldwide in 2009, the 2010 Salon showed no sign of being negatively effected. The number of visitors to this prestigious exhibition was up 10% on the figures for 2009.

Over the next week or so there will be news posted here and on The Watch Gallery website about the new timepieces unveiled this week at the Salon in Geneva.

Tsovet Watches that Make a Lasting Impression

  • Posted on January 27, 2010 at 2:28 pm

Tsovet WatchesTsovet watches are inspired by objects that have been built to last, and also by those that make a lasting impression. These inspirational objects are vintage industrial gauges and aviation instruments.

Tsovet have taken the durability and precision of these gauges and instruments, as well as their dated retro-style, to produce an attention grabbing collection of designer watches. The finely knurled dial knobs, the distinct indicator arms, and the distinct alphabetical and numerical indices are all style features that have been borrowed from the old gauges and instrument dials to create a distinctive and unique image.

The limited edition model shown here to the left is typical of the Tsovet brand. The screw-down 9mm knurled crown is reminiscent of an industrial gauge. But here it is produced in rose gold.

The watch has a four-piece, 48 mm case that is made of aerospace grade stainless steel and rose gold. It has a Swiss quartz movement, with a calendar. The dark brown Italian calf leather strap has an orange leather backing and a brushed rose gold buckle. The dial is protected by a hardened mineral crystal that is both scratch resistant and anti-reflective.

Tsovet watches are available from The Watch Department, official authorised dealers for the brand in the United Kingdom

2010 World Cup Parmigiani Watches

  • Posted on January 25, 2010 at 3:05 pm

parmigiani-watchesFor anyone who is not a keen football fan, summer (or winter if you are reading our blog in the southern hemisphere) 2010 is probably going to be a trying time. Yes, it is football World Cup year, and in just under five months the national football teams will be going head-to-head for one of the most coveted of all football trophies.

And, the great world of timekeeping is certainly not going to be left on the sidelines. Just unveiled at the 20th Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie are the Parmigiani watches specifically designed with the World Cup in mind. Parmigiani’s Captains’ Watch is a tribute to the spirit of sportsmanship.

The captains of thirteen countries’s football teams will have the once-in-a-life-time honour of designing their perfect 18 carat white old Pershing chronograph – ten of which will be produced as limited editions. The thirteen countries that have been chosen are Brazil, Argentina, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, and the United States.

A percentage of the profit from each Pershing chronograph will be donated to a charitable cause selected by each captain. Parmigiani has already produced three of the thirteen watches: the Pershing Chronographs designed by Fabio Cannavaro, the Italian captain (pictured here), by John Terry, the English captain and by Carlos Bocanegra, captain of the United States team.

The UTS Bauhaus 1000 Meter Collection: Possibly UTS’s Most Attractive watches Yet

  • Posted on January 23, 2010 at 4:47 pm

watchestrade.net UTS bauhaus 1000m watch on eBayUTS Munchen watch company is literally comprised of basically one extremely dedicate watch maker who puts each UTS watch together by hand. Utterly German in their form and function, these venerable replica watches make wonderful tools. Which is part of their appeal and drawback at the same time. The watches excel are their function, but could be described as being overly clinical in appearance. Of course it depend on who you ask, but this new line of UTS Bauhaus watches is certainly a fresh and appealing look that maintains the image and history of the brand.

Bauhaus design is difficult to describe, but has German origination and is deeply focused on function. Though it resembles minimalism, it is not that strictly speaking. For me, it is more a minimalist version of art deco or art nouveau. The real display of Bauhaus aesthetic is on the face of the watch. The rest of it is more or less standard UTS fare, which is not bad by any means.

I am impressed that despite it being a 1000 meter diver, the replica watch still has a sapphire window for viewing the movement on the rear of the case. Typically, you’ll need to completely seal up a watch for that level of water resistant. I’d love to see just how thick the rear crystal is (I think it is between 3-5mm thick). Size is good at 43mm, which to me is the prefect size for an everyday watch. Maybe 44mm, but it depends on the watch.

watchestrade.net UTS bauhaus 1000m watch black on eBayI have to admit I think at least a bit of the motivation in designing this watch came from the Sinn U1, which has an altogether different, but related design theme. Although the Bauhaus edition has a distinct look, even for UTS, it really isnt that much different than the rest of the UTS watches. Number indicators are now rods and dots, and the seconds hands is a slyly well-done combination of art and function. The bezel numbers and hash marks also have a special treatment. Inside is an ETA 2824-2 automatic mechanical movement. It is popular for rugged and deep diving watches for its hardiness and ability to withstand punishment. Both the steel and PVD covered steel versions are great to look at. I admit that these are probably the most desirable UTS watches I’ve seen thus far, especially due to the character in the style. They would probably look great with UTS’s mesh bracelet as well. Pricing is about $3,000-$4,000 depending on the configuration.

SIHH2010: Ralph Lauren Slim Classique

  • Posted on January 19, 2010 at 11:25 am

Last year, during SIHH2009, Ralph Lauren introduced a line of watches that definitely can be considered haute horlogerie. Some of the Ralph Lauren boutiques carried vintage watches (by Rolex, Patek Philippe etc) for quite some years now, but now they have their own impressive line-up.

This year, Ralph Lauren introduces the Slim Classique Collection. So if you think that Ralph Lauren is fashion only, think again.

The Slim Classique is a 42mm diameter timepiece and only 5.35mm thick. Last week, I blogged about the thinness factor over at Vacheron Constantin with their Ultra-Fine watches but it seems that more brands follow this trend this year at SIHH (Salon International de Haute Horlogerie) in Geneva.

This timepiece uses a movement by another king of thin, Piaget. A mechanical handwound movement (caliber RL430) with a thickness of only 2.1mm is ticking inside this RL Slim Classique. Although the caseback of this watch is solid (and therefore ideal for engraving purposes), the movement inside has a Côtes de Geneve and circular graining finish (click here for my article on movement decoration). The guilloché dial and Breguet style hands make this watch a classic and sophisticated looking timepiece and up to standards with the 42mm diameter. This will not look bad at all in the board room!

The watch itself is available in rosé gold, white gold and platinum (Pt950). The 192 diamonds (total amount of 1.11 carat) are optional for this wristwatch. Of course, you’ll wear this timepiece on a black alligator strap!

Below a close-up of the guilloché dial and Breguet style hands.

Prices are unknown at the time of writing this post. My guess is that they won’t come cheap and why should they? Although the brand name might remind most people about their Polo shirts, the used movement, used materials for case, crown and strap and the perfectly finished dial and hands are proof of the fact that they are really a true watch brand as well.
